What is home energy efficiency?

Home energy efficiency refers to how your home uses (or loses) energy. The more energy efficient your home is, the lower your electricity bill will be — and the more comfortable your home will feel. We help people make informed energy decisions by offering rebates, research-based blogs, free DIY home energy assessments, and programs like Smart Thermostat Rewards.

What is a home energy upgrade?

When we say “home energy upgrade,” we’re talking abou replacements or improvements that help you use energy more efficiently. That could be anything from getting a tune-up on your HVAC system to installing a new heat pump to switching to energy-efficient LED light bulbs or cleaning your refrigerator coils. The more energy efficient your home is, the lower your energy bills will be. We know that some of these upgrades can be costly, that’s why we offer rebates on many popular home energy upgrades.

  • Condos, townhomes and multi-unit apartment complexes are eligible.

  • Landlords can use residential services on as many of their eligible properties as they’d like. For most in-home services, the landlord and the tenant must sign an Agreement to Participate.
  • In most cases, owners of unoccupied homes can use residential services if the home has an active meter with a customer paying the monthly service bill.

If I rent my home, can I use TVA EnergyRight’s Residential Services?

If your local power company participates in a program, you may be able to participate with your landlord’s permission. For most in-home services, the landlord and the tenant must sign an Agreement to Participate.

I’m having a hard time keeping up with my utility bills. Does TVA EnergyRight offer bill assistance?

Make sure you look into TVA EnergyRight’s Home Uplift Program. We provide an average of $10,000 in free home energy improvements to income-eligible customers of participating local power companies. These improvements can save you hundreds of dollars on your utility bills. NOTE: Not all local power companies participate in Home Uplift.

In many cases, high energy bills are caused by home energy inefficiencies. If you think that may be the case in your situation, request a Home Energy Evaluation or take our free DIY Home Energy Assessment online, so you can begin to learn how your home uses (and loses) energy. If you uncover some areas that could use upgrading, you may be eligible for home energy upgrade assistance through your state’s Weatherization Assistance Program.

TVA EnergyRight Smart Thermostat Rewards Program FAQs

What are the financial benefits of Smart Thermostat Rewards?

You can enroll your existing thermostat and receive a $65 enrollment rebate. Or, if you don’t have a qualifying smart thermostat, you can purchase one on the TVA EnergyRight Marketplace and receive a rebate of up to $100 when you enroll.

Year-round participants will receive a $65 annual participation rebate. Summer-only participants will receive a $20 annual participation rebate. You must participate in at least 65% of the events to receive the annual participation rebate.

Check with your local power company to confirm eligibility; not all local power companies participate in Smart Thermostat Rewards.

Note: Check with your power provider to confirm eligibility; not all local power companies are participating in Smart Thermostat Rewards.

Why is TVA EnergyRight offering financial rewards for using less electricity?

When temperatures soar in the summer or plummet in the winter, demand for electricity increases.

Programs like Smart Thermostat Rewards help TVA make sure that electricity is available to the entire region during times of peak energy demand. They also help keep electricity more affordable for everyone.

How does Smart Thermostat Rewards work?

When you enroll in Smart Thermostat Rewards, you’re agreeing to allow automatic adjustments of up to four degrees for a duration of up to four hours during times of peak demand (up to 60 hours per season).

Prior to an event, enrolled thermostats may be adjusted to precondition — heat or cool — a home so that customers remain comfortable while the event is taking place. Preconditioning may not always occur if an urgent event is called.

When do adjustments typically occur?

Typically, adjustments of up to four degrees, for up to four hours (up to 60 hours per season), occur between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. Summer-only participants can expect events to be called between June 1 and September 30.

How will I know when a temperature adjustment is in progress?

Depending on the thermostat provider, notifications may appear on the thermostat or in your web/mobile application.

Can I opt out of an event or program?

Yes. Although you must maintain a 65% participation rate to remain in the program and receive the $65 (year-round) or $20 (summer-only) participation rebate, you can opt out of an event using your thermostat, mobile app or web browser. You can opt out of the Smart Thermostat Rewards program at any time by emailing TVAEnergyRightSmartThermostatRewards@energyhub.net and requesting to end participation.

Which smart thermostats qualify for the program?

Our participating smart thermostat partners include Alarm.com, Amazon, ecobee, Honeywell Home, Nest and Sensi.

How can I sign up for Smart Thermostat Rewards?

If you have a qualifying thermostat, and your local power company is participating in the program, you can visit EnergyRight.com/smartthermostat to enroll.
